SUNDAY MARCH 28TH THE BLUE DOOR OKC 8 pm

$30 tickets on sale at www.ticketstorm.com
and at all Party Galaxy Locations In OKC

To Help with Don Conoscenti’s medical expenses Don is a member of the Oklahoma
Woody Guthrie community, a longtime performer at Woodyfest and at the Blue Door.
He embodies the spirit of Woody as much as anyone so this is our time to help our
brother in need.   www.donconoscenti.com

The spirit of the Guthrie Family has been handed down from generation to generation.
“It’s in the songs, the humor, the commitment to keep making the world a little
better for everyone,” says Arlo. The Legacy Tour will both honor Woody’s tradition
and explore new ground as it weaves its way through the generations of Guthries.

Arlo Guthrie tours the country on The Guthrie Family Legacy Tour celebrating four
generations of Guthrie Family music along with his son Abe, his daughter’s duo Sarah
Lee Guthrie & Johnny Irion, and multi-instrumentalist Gordon Titcomb. The Guthries
will visit Woody’s songs and share old stories. The spirit of the Guthrie Family has
been handed down from generation to generation. “It’s in the songs, the humor, the
commitment to keep making the world a little better for everyone,” says Arlo. The
Legacy Tour will both honor Woody’s tradition and explore new ground as it weaves
its way through the generations of Guthries.

There are millions of people who know the name Woody Guthrie. There may even be some
who are familiar with his songs like “This Land Is Your Land,” or “The Reno Blues
(Philadelphia Lawyer),” or “Oklahoma Hills.” Many come to discover him through his
friends like Pete Seeger, or perhaps young Bob Dylan. Nora Guthrie (Woody’s daughter
and Arlo’s sister) has introduced Woody to many young musicians, asking them to
create melodies to lyrics where no music existed. Wilco and Billy Bragg, Eliza
Gilkyson, The Klezmatics, Janis Ian and many more have recorded these new
collaborations. Arlo wrote a haunting melody for his father’s song “My Peace.” The
Legacy Tour will cover family favorites of Woody’s originals and the new songs.
“…[Arlo is the best interpreter of his father’s songs, and to hear Arlo Guthrie
sing a Woody Guthrie song is to hear it wonderfully close to its original source.” -
Steve Leggett, All Music Guide
Arlo Guthrie, along with his son Abe, daughter number three, Sarah Lee and her
husband, Johnny Irion will form the core band. They have all contributed to the
family legacy by writing and performing their own material. And everyone will be
singing Woody’s songs that have kept the Guthrie Family the first family of American
Folk Music for generations.
Do not miss this incredible opportunity to be a part of the Guthrie Family Legacy.

Doors open at 7 pm Show at 8 pm

FEB 15 2010
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dear Friends In Music
Sorry that we had to postpone the Jimmy Webb shows last weekend.  Jimmy simply could
not get out of New York with the huge storm there.  Thankfully we re scheduled for
March 26-27, exactly one month from the initial date.   While we are sold out for
guaranteed seating, we should be able to get in about 15 more folks for each show.
Come out the weather is gonna be good I promise!
This week  we are proud to present
The Burns Sisters
Thursday  March 4th
www.burnsisters.com
[http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?et=1103133042490&s=1790&e=001XS9w3gXTqxHM-ytP_tHOcxfqe9yPrftFGfx8mJnjxurrdKOGRlXLkbNSMPncLcDZjxkf00v4OdZ17Bxkg1_ikiGKU8QZwaITdiRrkrUhm3CVgBjbvyiRxA==]
I am very proud to have the Burns Sisters back to the Blue Door.  They are among
the best who have ever played here and more than anyone combine folk and country
with a little soul and blues stirred in for good measure.  Essential listening for
fans of great songs and great singing.
$20  doors at 7  show at 8 pm
Lucy Kaplansky & Will Kimbrough
Friday  March 5th
Lucy Kaplansky has been one of the bright lights in American folk music for over
a decade.  Her albums are always full of smart songs that lie somewhere between
folk, pop and americana.  This time Will Kimbrough will open the show and that
in itself is enough to tell your friends about.  Will plays guitar for Rodney Crowell
as well, but he is at his best on stage singing his great roots oriented songs.
From his days in rock and roll with Will & the Bushmen to his time playing the
listening
rooms all over the country, WIll Kimbrough is the real deal.  This is gonna be one
great show folks!!!
$20  doors at 8  show at 9 pm
Jimmy LaFave Band & John Fullbright
Saturday  March 6th
This show is sold out for guaranteed seating but come on out anyway and we will
get you in somehow!!  Jimmy is the greatest soul voice in American music in the
last twenty years and his timeless songs as well as his great Bob Dylan covers have
made him a crowd favorite from coast to coast.  He is back home for this show and
Jimmy sounds better at the Blue Door than he does anywhere else.  Opening is the
always charming John Fullbright who never ceases to amaze me with his songwriting
giflts and great interpertations of classic songs. John has a studio record coming
out on Jimmy’s Music Road records later this year.
JOHN FULLBRIGHT
An evening with Jimmy Webb is like no other show at the Blue Door.  His timeless
songs and his wonderful stage presence make for a classic combination.  Many have
said they would pay for the stories alone, but thankfully Jimmy is also gonna sing
many of his classics and more obscure gems.  Recently Jimmy recorded a new album,
“Just Across The River” which features guests such as Billy Joel, WIllie Nelson,
Linda Ronstadt, Vince Gill, Mark Knoffler, Michael McDonald, JD Souther and Lucinda
Williams.  Now that is some support.  Jimmy told me it’s his best work ever and
the record should be out sometime in 2010.   Joining Jimmy will be Oklahoma’s next
great songwriter John Fullbright playing songs from his “Live At The Blue Door”
record.
FOR THE SAKE OF THE SONG
FEB 15 2010
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Dear Friends In Music

Sorry I haven’t written in a while. Things are kinda crazy at the Blue Door now
as we continue with this massive historical restoration project. Here is what
has happened so far

1. The front stones are down and will be put back in the exact same place.
2. We have new AC/Heat now in front concert room and in back office
3. New insulation, new plumbing for the new bathrooms ( they still are not done
yet sorry)
4. New side doors ( to be painted Blue soon)
5. New window near the patio area
6. New steel reinforcement beams in the concert room and bathroom area
7.  New stage lights
8. New plumbing for the back apartment
9. All the cracks in the front concert room are gone, no drain to trip over now
all brand new concrete. Soon we will paint it the nice burgundy color it was when
I started doing shows.

That is about it for now and soon we will have a new front and side porch, new
bathrooms,
nice landscaping and lighting outside, a new fire pit for the cooler days as you
sit on the patio. It’s gonna be so great to just have things work, all extension
cords gone etc.

After we have our ‘facelift’ we still need operating expenses so please help raise
money however you can for our continued efforts to bring the best singer/songwriters
and instrumentalists to the Blue Door. We have raised $1,300 on our $100 dollar
per person campaign and need more for our goal of $10,000. Thanks so much

Ok now to the music. We have had some great shows as all this construction is goin
on, even with just porta pottys as bathrooms. Ray Wylie Hubbard was great as always,
Mark Stuart and Stacey Earle played their last duo show at the Blue Door on Feb.
5th and will both be back sometime. Po Girl sold out the Blue Door for the first
time, and KC Clifford set a Blue Door attendance mark for 255 folks coming on two
nights! KC is a local artist but not JUST a local artist, she is kickin ass all
over the place from the Northeast to Chicago.

Tomorrow night John Fullbright takes the stage with Terry Buffalo Ware.

Saturday night the great Steve Young returns with his son Jubal Lee Young.

Feb 26-27 Jimmy Webb returns with John Fullbright opening

then it’s almost spring and so many shows lined up already!!!

Love each other as best you can spread the word about the Blue Door

LIVE MUSIC IS BETTER!!

THE BLUE DOOR’S FACE LIFT…. TO BE CONTINUED……..

JOHN  FULLBRIGHT IN CONCERT

TUESDAY  FEB 16    8 pm

with   Terry “Buffalo” Ware

John Fullbright returns to the Blue Door with his friend Terry “Buffalo” Ware fresh
from Terry’s hot rockin’ 60th Birthday Party Gig with The Shambles. John was
among a million musicians who came out for Terry’s birthday and Tuesday you can
JUBAL LEE YOUNG

SAT  FEB  20TH

Join us for a great night and a great father & son show . Steve Young is one of
America’s greatest living songwriters and he posesses one of the truly great voices
in all of music. His signature songs “Seven Bridges Road,” “Lonesome, Onry & Mean”
and “Montgomery In The Rain” are just a few of his wonderful roots music that defies
easy classification. Jubal Lee is following in his dad’s footsteps, creating great
new music for another generation. It will be yet another classic Blue Door show.
Tickets are $20 on sale now at all Patry Galaxy locatins, online at

JOHN FULLBRIGHT

An evening with Jimmy Webb is like no other show at the Blue Door. His timeless
songs and his wonderful stage presence make for a classic combination. Many have
said they would pay for the stories alone, but thankfully Jimmy is also gonna sing
many of his classics and more obscure gems. Recently Jimmy recorded a new album,
“Just Across The River” which features guests such as Billy Joel, WIllie Nelson,
Linda Ronstadt, Vince Gill, Mark Knoffler, Michael McDonald, JD Souther and Lucinda
Williams. Now that is some support. Jimmy told me it’s his best work ever and
the record should be out sometime in 2010. Joining Jimmy will be Oklahoma’s next
great songwriter John Fullbright playing songs from his “Live At The Blue Door”
record.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dear Friends
Happy New Year From The Blue Door
We begin our 18th year Friday night with Robbie Fulks.  As many know we are under
construction as this great remodel by designer and builder Bill Gumerson continues.
The good news is that we will get new restrooms, the bad news is that we are only
able to provide porta potty’s for this weekend.  Hopefully by nest weekend they
will be finished.  I am gonna start sending out little notices with pictures and
all next week, but I have to tell you it’s gonna be something special.
And the shows will go on!!!
FRIDAY   ROBBIE FULKS with guitarist Rob Gjersoe    9  pm  $20
Robbie Fulks is a true songwriting legend.  He has written so many great songs over
the years that it’s hard to single out any really.  “Let’s Kill Saturday Night”
is one of my favorites.  From my vantage point Robbie is like the American Elvis
Costello, capable of mixing up styles to suit his moods.  Check out his music here
www.robbiefulks.com
[http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?et=1102927838883&s=1790&e=00116YprkyCPcFzoTycjLoo64bQGpq1W8vOkO-MiP8BUQQPvp8m9mluNx7wlQbEZgepVZVP-BHQ4kG-AXTaBSP75lQiYYDf3mcnpg1Eas4EUHpye1EABvY5Ow==]
and come see this great American original. He was last here 10 years ago so please
brave the cold and come out.
SATURDAY    MONICA TAYLOR CD RELEASE & Teena Johnson’s Birthday!!!  8  PM  $10
The Cimmaron songbird returns to the Blue Door with a great new album and a wonderful
line up of musicians to help her.  Monica is one of the nicest ladies I have ever
met in and out of music and her songs are wonderfully organic, a mix of down home
folk and smart country.  Make sure you pick up her new album, “Cotton Shirt”  on
sale at the gig.  The Queen of the Blue Door, Teena Johnson celebrates her 39th
Birthday so come on out and give the lady some love!!!  She puts up with my sorry
ass so that should count for a few presents I would think!!!
Check out Monica’s music here www.monicataylor.com
SUNDAY  IAN MOORE    8  pm  $20
An Ian Moore show at the Blue Door is always a great experience.  Ian makes you
feel like you are the only one in the room as he plays a wide variety of his music,
from his younger ‘guitar god’ days to his newer edgy  acoustic music that rocks
as much as the band stuff.  Ian is really an adopted Okie City guy, as he has many
friends here.  This will be the last Blue Door show with longtime musical sidekick
Kullen Fuchs, who is moving on to get into some real classic country. Kullen gets
to shine at the Blue Door so lets make him feel great Sunday night.  www.ianmoore.com
RE:        Silent Auction
WHEN:  November 6th, 7th & 8th
WHERE: The Blue Door
Dear Blue Door Supporters:
As many of you know, thanks to a very generous donation, the Blue Door will soon undergo long, needed repairs and improvements. Great care is being taken to ensure that the now legendary sound and vibe remains the same, while improving creature comforts with new, quieter climate-control, a water-tight structure, updated bathrooms, updates to the green room and office, structural improvements to the building and an exterior facelift, including landscaping. This promises to be a first-class, major upgrade designed to ensure that the Blue Door is around for our enjoyment for many years to come.
Of course, the Blue Door is just an empty shell without the selfless dedication of its visionary, Greg Johnson. Greg has introduced Oklahoma City to scores and scores of wonderful songwriters and performers who would never make it up here, if not for Greg’s willingness to go out on a financial limb to provide a musical
home for these artists and a unique listening environment for us. The capital donation being made will only go for the structural makeover, not towards operating. For over 15 years now, Greg has dedicated virtually 100% of his life to the Blue Door, constantly struggling with financial shortfalls. The money he is able to take out of the business keeps him well below the poverty line. If we want the Blue Door to continue, it must have renewed and sustained support from its patrons - in other words, us.
As a first step, I have put together a silent auction to coincide with the upcoming annual Woody Guthrie Tribute (11/8) and the two preceding concerts by Blue Door favorites, Don Conoscenti (11/6) and John Fullbright (11/7). I am asking for donations from both within and outside the Blue Door family. Most of us have something to contribute. We are business people that provide services or products we can contribute.
We are musicians and visual artist who can contribute some of our work or lessons.  We are athletes/enthusiasts who can contribute adventures or tickets to sporting events. We are gourmet cooks who can contribute a private culinary evening. Some us have vacation homes that we can contribute for a getaway.  The music we love requires the same sort of support we give to the Symphony or the
Lyric or Public Broadcasting. So, please join me in supporting this very important part of our cultural community.
To contribute, contact me directly via email (moranpro@earthlink.net) or phone (206-414-5801).
All donated items/services are tax deductible, so be sure to provide me with fair market value of your donation, along with your description and/or digital image of the item/service being donated.
Thank you in advance for your support.
Sincerely,
Everett
Ramsay Midwood is one of the coolest artists working today.  Somewhere between blues and folk and country, Ramsay is really his own genre altogether.  It isn’t likely that anyone is going to accuse Ramsay Midwood of being glossy or ultraslick anytime soon. Earthy, gritty, rugged, and soulful, Midwood is an Austin, TX-based singer/songwriter whose folk-rock, Americana, and roots rock owe a major debt to the blues — in fact, his songs are soaked in blues feeling. Midwood brings a variety of influences to the table. Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Levon Helm, and Ramblin’ Jack Elliott have obviously had a major impact on his work; so have Bob Dylan and Tom Waits (especially Waits’ early recordings). There are traces of Bruce Springsteen in some of Midwood’s writing, and there are times when he brings to mind the darker, moodier side of bluesmen John Lee Hooker and Lightnin’ Hopkins.  For this gig Ramsay has hired Terry “Buffalo” Ware and two of his Shamble bandmates, Marlin Butcher and Ray Van Hooser.  It should be a great night of music.
Ian Moore has been coming to the Blue Door for years now, and it was here that he really started to become a mature singer songwriter, long removed from just being a blues guitar wizard.  Ian can play the blues as well as anyone, but he had more to say that that idiom could allow him .  Now he rocks when he wants and also plays quieter shows that while sometimes rocking are a more reflective side of him.  It’s always fun because Ian has a lot of friends around here and it always feels like home.
Dear Friends,
As part of our continued efforts to make the Blue Door better than ever, we have been re-wiring the electric, changing the computer hardware to make it wifi capable, and making the stage more suited to plug in amps, tuners, etc.
I want to thank Travis Linville and Cindy Woolf for such a great show Tuesday night.  Travis is among a handful of truly great Okie artists and he deserves all the success in the world.  I really loved Cindy’s songs too, kinda like a more rockin’ Iris Dement.  Great Stuff.
RANDY WEEKS & JOHN FULLBRIGHT
THURS  AUG 13   8 pm  $15  byob of course
Tonight John Fullbright returns to the Blue Door, sharing the bill with the great Randy Weeks.  Anyone who has been to the Blue Door in the last six months knows that I am John’s manager and as such it’s my job to champion him as much as possible.  That is why I am tying to couple him with great songwriters whenever I can.  Randy Weeks is that sort of writer.  Best known for writing Lucinda Williams’  hit “I Can’t Let Go,”  Randy is a songwriters songwriter.  His last record, produced by Will Sexton, is an amazing testament that Randy Weeks is among the finest pop, roots rock and alt country songwriters in the world. For this show John and Randy
will be on stage together trading songs.
BRANDON JENKINS
FRI  AUG 14  9 pm  $20  byob of course
It’s been a long time since Brandon Jenkins has been to the Blue Door.  Since that time, he has become one of the most popular ‘red dirt’ artists now working in Texas, and while a lot of “Texas Red Dirt”  gets on my last nerve, Brandon remains a fine songwriter in the midst of mediocrity.  He is better than Cory Morrow, Pat Green, Kevin Fowler and many more you can name who continue down the same path, but will less smarts.  I still love Brandon’s “Live At The Blue Door’  record, and that record is similar to what he will sound like Friday night.
DAVE ALVIN & THE GUILTY WOMEN
MON  AUG 17  8 pm  $25  advance $30 at the door
Ok now if you wanna see what promises to be the most rockin’ show in Blue Door history, don’t miss Dave Alvin with his all star lineup of great female musicians.  Dave is a consummate singer/songwriter, folkie, rocker, and bad ass guitar player.  This show will highlight all manner of Dave Alvin music, from his more traditional music to the rockin sounds of the Blasters.  Featuring Cindy Cashdollar, Laurie Lewis, Lisa Pancrest, Amy Farris, Christy McNichol, Sarah Brown and Nina Gerber, this will be one kick-ass band - maybe the best band ever assembled.  Get your tickets in advance please.
We have a lot of great shows coming up. Also we are doing a major revamping of the Blue Door, and should be all completed by the time of our anniversary in January.
We really need help in getting the word out about shows.  I would like to find a street team leader who can get flyers, posters, brouchures out to the metro area.  Of course members of the street team will get into shows free and other goodies down the line.
If you are interested in this please contact Melissa Boone ( our new marketing volunteer guru and good buddy of course)  her number is  580 370 0848
Dave Alvin and The Guilty Women – Bio
The poignant journey which culminated in Dave Alvin’s new album Dave Alvin and The Guilty Women began on one of those San Francisco fall days that seemed to melt back into the bay fog as slyly as it emerged. Dave Alvin was bounding off the stage at the massive, free Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival. Nearly before he was able to set foot on his beloved California dirt, Alvin was grabbed by friend and Yep Roc label co-founder Glenn Dicker. “We’ve gotta make a record!”
The reason for Dicker’s excitement - and the excitement of the thousands of music fans who just witnessed it - was the set Alvin and all female band The Guilty Women had just laid down moments before. Dave and band members Cindy Cashdollar, Nina Gerber, Laurie Lewis, Christy McWilson, Sarah Brown, Amy Farris and Lisa Pankratz blazed through their set, surprising each other at every turn. “It just felt so natural,” says Alvin. “It was like I had been playing with them for a hundred years.”
You couldn’t tell, watching him on stage that day, but the events in Alvin’s life that had led up to it were some of the most trying of his life. Six months before, Guilty Men accordionist Chris Gaffney passed away following a valiant battle with cancer. Gaffney wasn’t only the accordionist in Alvin’s band, he was his best friend.
As support and well wishes flowed to Gaffney’s family from friends and fellow musicians, Alvin set out calling some of the biggest names in roots music to come together to honor is fallen friend. The result, Man of Somebody’s Dreams: A Tribute to the Songs of Chris Gaffney will be released by Yep Roc along side Dave Alvin and The Guilty Women on 5/26/09. Artists and friends like Calexico, Los Lobos, Alejandro Escovedo, James McMurtry and many more coalesced for an album of Gaffney songs benefiting his family and the non-profit Hungry for Music, who provide musical instruments to underprivileged children. “The response from the artists was immediate,” remarks Alvin. “They all wanted a chance to help Chris’ family and most of all, a chance to pay tribute to him and his songs!”
With the catharsis of the tribute album project in tow, Alvin turned his attention to his next musical move. One thing was clear, he knew he wasn’t yet ready to record with The Guilty Men again. The wound of Gaffney’s death was still too fresh, the space on the stage where he once stood still too empty. Alvin decided now was the time for something new. Knowing Hardly Strictly was just up the tracks, he called friend and Austin-based guitarist Cindy Cashdollar. Cashdollar jumped in with both feet and the other ladies followed suit. Having played together in various incarnations with several Guilty Women in the past, Alvin was confident the chemistry would be right. “The reality that we’d never played together as a group and that there was no time to rehearse before our debut performance didn’t bother me at all. I knew that they were all master musicians who could easily handle any sort of song I could throw at them. And that’s exactly what they did and they did it effortlessly and beautifully.”
The Austin, TX recording sessions progressed in much the same fashion with Christy McWilson contributing two songs, Sarah Brown one and an Amy Farris/Dave Alvin co-write. The tunes were built around Dave’s acoustic guitar work, with the ladies surrouding Alvin with an instrumental blanket that made it clear womanly intuition isn’t just an emotional asset but a musical one as well.
FOR THE SAKE OF THE SONG
Dear Friends,
Hot Enough For Ya?   Well this seems strange but the Blue Door’s AC is working better
than ever.  At the Graham Colton show, we had over 120 here and it was very pleasant.
See what happens when you change the AC filters!!
The Woody Guthrie festival was wonderful as always.  So glad to see Woody honored
and so nice to see old friends and meet many new friends along the way.  If they
would move it to October I suspect many more people would want to attend, but looks
like it’s staying in July for now.  The best music I heard at the festival  was
Bill Chambers, John Fullbright, Butch Hancock, Jimmy LaFave and Andy Hardin singing
“Wooley Bully” with Terry “Buffalo” Ware and the Woodyfest House band.  But I missed
a lot of course.  Out at the Grape Ranch Tom Skinner hosted Susan Herndon, Greg
Jacobs and Fullbright and I really loved this afternoon of Okie music.  Tom Skinner
showed us some new Dan Bern songs; Susan Herndon showcased her Okie jazz influenced
folk; Greg Jacobs showed why he deserves to be front and center at the Woody Fest
with his great Okie history story songs that drip with authenticity by way of his
ultra smooth red dirt croon, and John Fullbright put on a spirited set that featured
some great covers he never has played at the Blue Door.  This guy could never write
another song in his life and still be one of the most viable artists in folk and
americana today.  Thank God he isn’t thinking like that.
This week we feature a bona fide music legend when Susan Cowsill brings her great
rockin’ band here Thursday.  I have been looking forward to this show for a long
time.  Although I have never met Susan, I always felt that her music belongs in
the Blue Door.  Please spread the word about this amazing songwriter and musician,
who first captured America’s heart as a member of the Cowsills.  Susan has also
worked a lot with Dwight Twilley, sang duets with Jules Shear and Peter Hoesaple
and convinced Lucinda Williams to sing on her solo debut.
Friday night our friend Saturday John Fullbright returns with his brand new CD “Live
At The Blue Door”  This is gonna be one great show as Oklahoma’s newest
singer/songwriter
star showcases songs from his first national release.  Won’t be long before the
whole country knows about John Fullbright.
See ya at the shows
THIS WEEK AT
THE BLUE DOOR
THURSDAY - JULY 16 - 8 pm
SUSAN COWSILL BAND
$15 at the door]
A little about Susan Cowsill
The singer/songwriter made her initial mark on popular culture at the tender age
of eight with The Cowsills, the 60s family pop group that not only scored Top Ten
singles The Rain, the Park and Other Things, Hair and We Can Fly but also served
as the real-life inspiration for TV’s fictional Partridge Family. During Susan’s
decade with roots-pop supergroup The Continental Drifters, she won the hearts of
discerning listeners with her impassioned vocals and personally-charged songwriting,
gracing three widely-acclaimed albums and a decade’s worth of riveting performances.
Cowsill’s vocal talents have beautifully supported recordings from artists as diverse
as Dwight Twilley, Redd Kross, The Smithereens, Giant Sand, Nanci Griffith, Carlene
Carter and Jules Shear, while her compositions have been covered by The Bangles
and Hootie and the Blowfish.
Cowsill’s much-loved prior work can now be viewed as a prelude to the stunning solo
achievement of  her debut solo album,  “Just Believe It.”  The collection marks
a musical and personal milestone for the artist, embodying the same qualities of
musical craft and emotional nuance that distinguished her work with The Continental
Drifters, while adding a deeper, more resonant and unmistakably personal edge. The
CD features guest appearances by Lucinda Williams on the hauntingly bittersweet
“Nanny’s Song”; Counting Crows front man Adam Duritz, harmonizing with Cowsill on
the upbeat “Palm of My Hand,” (also featuring Cowsill’s former Drifters bandmate
and real-life sister-in-law, Bangle Vicki Peterson) Along with 13 new Cowsill
originals,
“Just Believe It” includes a stunning cover of Sandy Denny/Fairport Convention classic
“Who Knows Where the Time Goes”. The entire CD maintains a solid grounding in the
organic honesty of rural folk and the catchy melodicism of ’60s pop, while dipping
into the fluid R&B grooves of Cowsill’s longtime hometown of New Orleans.
Hurricane Katrina posed unexpected challenges to New Orleans musicians, including
Susan Cowsill. After losing her home and possessions when Katrina destroyed her
city, Susan later learned that her beloved brother Barry had lost his life in the
storm’s aftermath. Susan’s commitment to New Orleans remains passionate and steadfast,
which is evident in her powerful Hurricane Katrina song, Crescent City Snow. According
to respected sources in the music industry, this song just may go down in musical
history as the most poignant to come out of the catastrophe. Susan does all she
can to help maintain national awareness of conditions in New Orleans. She is proud
to perform alongside her fellow musicians for the benefit of New Orleans and has
contributed her songs to relief effort compilation CDs. Susan Cowsill’s humanitarian
efforts also include working against child abuse and actively supporting peaceful
causes.
Whether she’s delivering a heart-tugging ballad or belting out a punchy rock tune,
critics agree that Susan Cowsill has an exceptional talent for connecting with a
song’s emotional core. Rolling Stone praised Just Believe It as “The hardy,
heartbreaking
sound of…a bar-band angel…in the prime of her singing and songwriting life.”
The Washington Post proclaimed “As good as Cowsill’s voice is, her smart, emotional
songwriting is her biggest asset.” All Music Guide raved “Cowsill has stories to
tell and she tells them with a skill and vigor that never lets artifice get in
the way of cutting to the emotional truth… Quite simply, debut albums are rarely
as moving, as revealing or as accomplished as Just Believe It. This is masterful
music from a major talent.”
This is a must show for music lovers!!!
Come support Susan as she gets back to being a full time musician after the Katrina
Hurricane.
ERIC DE VRIES
GENE WILLIAMS
GREG JACOBS]
Our friend Gene Williams is bringing Dutch singer songwriter Eric Devries to the
Blue Door, with special guest Greg Jacobs opening the proceedings.
December 2007 saw the release of Eric Devries’ second solo cd. Titled “Sweet Oblivion”
is recorded with his new band ‘The Easy’ but also contains three songs recorded
in Tulsa, U.S.A. while Devries was on tour there in the spring of 2005. With his
debut solo cd “Little of a Romeo” Eric Devries launched himself to the top of the
dutch Americana/folk scene, almost out of nowhere but not quite. At one time Eric
Devries fronted “The Big Easy”, an amsterdam band reknowned for their acoustic approach
towards catchy poprocktunes where Devries’ songwriting skills first became adamant.
They came in second in Hollands biggest talent competion and got airplay on both
national radio as well as national tv. They toured The Netherlands and Switzerland
but failed to land a record deal and quit in 1996. Devries reinvented himself and
went solo and toured the netherlands, often performing together as an acoustic
singersongwriter
duo with BJ Baartmans. In 2004 Devries released his debut cd which was very well
received in the alt. country / americana / folk scene. With “Sweet Oblivion” Devries
bridges the gap between his more band orientated past with his solo work of the
present. With these 12 songs Devries once more proves his songwriting skills.
The great Okie singer/songwriter and historian Greg Jacobs opens the show with his
acclaimed songs about Okie history and his songs about being oh so lucky in love.
Most around Checotah call him  Mr. Jacobs but we know him as the smooth red dirt
crooner.  He is a masterful singer/songwriter who has yet to earn his proper due.
JOHN FULLBRIGHT
“LIVE AT THE BLUE DOOR” CD  RELEASE
$10 online or at the door
Although just 21 years old, Okemah, Oklahoma native John Fullbright sings like he
has been around for years.  Firmly rooted in many American musical styles including
folk, country, blues, bluegrass and jazz,  John is just now beginning his musicial
journey that is sure to delight listeners from  coast to coast.   Already he has
the ringing endorsements of many great musicians including Jimmy Webb, Kevin Welch,
Ray Bonneville, Greg Trooper, Dan Narvarro, Steve Poltz, Darden Smith, Tom Skinner,
Greg Jacobs, Will Sexton and Jimmy LaFave.  Equally skilled on guitar, harmonica,
piano and accordion, John understands best that “it’s called playing music for a
reason.”   That is why you can find him at the music festival campgrounds  late
at night pickin’ out songs from such mentors as Townes Van Zandt, Hoyt Axton and
Leonard Cohen, along with his own unique songs that belie his young age
After playing in  Oklahoma singer/songwriter Mike McClure’s band for a year, John
has become the most talked about “Folk” musician in Oklahoma, playing solo and bringing
the house down wherever he goes. He was a bonafide hit at this year’s Folk Alliance
Conference in Memphis where he met many musicians very attuned to what he was doing.
Will Sexton was especially taken by John’s versatility and invited John to play
the Mucky Duck in Houston this past May.   John also opened  for  fellow Oklahoman
and songwriting legend Jimmy Webb on a return to the Blue Door and just last week
he was a huge hit at the Woody Guthrie festival in Okemah, Oklahoma.
Just prior to the 2009 Folk Alliance conference,  John recorded a live CD at the
Blue Door in Oklahoma City.  Featuring all his own songs as well as a stellar version
of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah”  “Live At The Blue Door” is a wonderful calling
card for John Fullbright and the release promises to  get him in the conversation
as one of the best emerging artists in American music today.
Doors open at 8 pm
